There are certain father-son moments shared together that will be remembered for a lifetime.

It can be the first time playing catch; the first time going to a professional baseball game; going on a road trip.

Pulling a 1-of-1 card together can certainly qualify. Rob Quest and his 11-year-old son, Weston, recently got to share an ultimate father-son collecting experience.

The duo pulled the Topps Chrome Update Rookie Debut Patch Auto card of Detroit Tigers pitcher Brenan Hanifee. That is one of 251 RDPA chase cards in the product.

“When we pull something big like that, we’re kind of speechless at first,” Rob said. “Then I just started getting really excited. I’m like, ‘Weston, we just pulled one of the biggest cards of our lives!’ We started dancin’ around. It was crazy. We like to get all hyped up and stuff.”

‘Absolutely Stunned’

After work on Nov. 13, Rob drove to his home in St. Charles, Missouri, and had the itch to rip some packs on Topps Chrome Update release day. He asked Weston if he wanted to head to their favorite local hobby shop, and the two drove 15 minutes to Restlesscraft Breakers.

The Quests eyed the five hobby boxes of Topps Chrome Update that were remaining on the shop’s counter.

“My son likes to do a little thing where he counts them off and he picks a random one—second one in the stack,” Rob said.

Weston, who turns 12 on Dec. 7, wanted to pull a big card.

“When we get cards, my dad always tells me like the good stuff,” Weston said. “So, I always say, what if we get this or that? Then we get excited about it.”

The Quest boys started their quest. Just two packs in, the third card from the back caught Weston’s attention.

“I kind of saw the blue lines of the border,” Weston said. “I thought it might be something pretty good.”

Added Rob: “When he put the card to the side, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, man. We just ripped an MLB Debut Patch.’”

It was a redemption card for the Hanifee 1-of-1. The RDPA redemptions have blue borders and resemble the actual RDPA card.

“We were just absolutely stunned we pulled that thing,” Quest said. “It’s crazy.”

The odds of pulling a RDPA card are 1 in 28,105 hobby packs.

“After that second pack, I let Weston rip the whole box, because he was on fire, dude,” Rob said.

The Quests found some nice cards in the remainder of the box. They pulled a Lava Lamp Orange/Black card numbered to 15 of Texas Rangers young star Wyatt Langford. The guys—who are big St. Louis Cardinals fans—also ripped a pack to find a Lava Lamp Magenta/Purple card numbered to 299 of local fan favorite Tommy Pham.

A 1-of-1 Magnet

Rob isn’t a stranger to pulling 1-of-1 cards. In fact, after re-entering The Hobby two years ago, he has pulled five Superfractors. Amazing.

Just this calendar year, Rob has discovered three: the Hanifee RDPA, a Narcisco Crook from 2023 Topps Chrome Platinum, and a Jacob Misiorowski from 2024 Topps Pro Debut. All those big hits were from boxes bought at Restlesscraft Breakers.

After holding onto the Hanifee RDPA card for a little over a week, Rob thought it would be best to sell it through an eBay auction.

Rob and Weston both really enjoyed the opportunity of being part of just a handful of collectors that have been able to pull a coveted RDPA card. And for the father-son duo to do it together made the moment even more special.

“This is a fun hobby. I like to do it,” Weston said. “It’s something different. I don’t know a lot of people that open cards with their parents, so it’s a cool thing to do.”

“It was really something cool,” Rob added. “We’ll always remember this.”
